Farming on Huckle Hill Today
Stepping onto Huckle Hill Farm today, a lot has changed in over 100 years of farming. Where milking cows and draft horses once roamed the hilly plateau, now flowers bloom in seasonal succession and dot the landscape. We grow a colorful mix of seasonal annuals and perennials on a small but prolific parcel - 1/4 acre. We beat to the drum “less is more,” and work diligently to grow healthy crops in a manageable way, with respect for the limited resources, including our time. Farming is truly a labor of love, and it shows in the flowers we produce.
Down the hill, our goal is to grow flowers/flour in two ways. In addition to growing fresh flowers to nurture the soul and bring joy and calm to the senses, we also grow wheat to mill into flour, and expect our first harvest this summer. We’ll keep you posted on our secondary flour production, one that provides sustenance and great baking potential.
If a farm needs a mission, ours is to give back to others who could benefit from the beauty of flowers. During the height of our growing season (July - September), we aim to deliver fresh cut flowers once a week to a local (within 15 miles of farm) Nonprofit, Senior Center, Public School, Civil Service Department ( Police, Fire station), etc. Click the button to recommend a flower donation site - and thanks for making someone’s day, including ours.
